Algonquin Nation Secretariat Supports Rally in Opposition to NSDF Project
Anishnabe Algonquin Traditional Territory (February 13, 2024) - The communities
represented by the Algonquin Nation Secretariat are joining the many voices in support of the
rally planned for February 14, 2024 at Parliament Hill, Ottawa in opposition of the approval of
the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) at the Chalk River Laboratories Site.
The NSDF plan is to house nuclear waste from the Chalk River Laboratories site in a facility that
is very close to the Kichi Sipi (Ottawa River). The lack of meaningful consultation with the
Algonquin communities has been voiced by several leaders and remains an issue. Being so close
to the Kichi Sipi is a huge concern for the Algonquin People. The Kichi Sipi is the backbone of
our Territory and watershed is vital to all the people and animals of the area. The River is an
important piece of the Anisihabe identity and there are many sacred sites close to the planned
facility.
The Algonquin people are not alone in their opposition to the NSDF project. They join the over
150 municipalities in Quebec and Ontario as well as the Anisknabek Nation and Iroquois Caucus
in opposing the NSDF project.
In relation to the project, Grand Chief Lisa Robinson said “As Anishinabeg, we are the people of
the Kitchi Sibi (Ottawa River). It is our duty to protect the land and water for future generations,
for all life that the land and water sustains. Protection of water is of the utmost importance not
only for Anishnabeg, but for all who live and connect with the Kitchi Sibi. Say no to the NSDF.
Together we are stronger, protect the Kichi Sipi.”
